Dr. John (~29' into the interview):
'I would suggest that people find some co-writer that they can learn from. Early on I was lucky enough to have several really cool ones. And I, I admit it, some of them beat me for songs and did a lot of really dirty stuff, but you gotta learn from something. You know what I care about: is this the matter that if you don't learn some kind of way and take some chances, you're never gonna learn anything. If you get beat on some songs, it's better to have got ripped off than to never took a chance to write the song, up in being worried about it. I mean that's how I look at life. I mean, you gonna get stiffed. Life ain't about a bunch of sweethearts looking out for you.'
"As I leave the Army to those with responsibility to carry on, I'd say service in this business is tough and often dangerous," he said. "It extracts a price for participants, and that price can be high. It is tempting to protect yourself from the personal and professional cost of loss by limiting how much you commit, how much you believe and trust in people, and how deeply you care. ... If I had it to do over again, I'd do some things in my career differently, but not many. I believed in people and I still believe in them. I trusted and I still trust. I cared and I still care. I wouldn't have had it any other way."
